Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle and Laser Hair Removal Timing. How often should you have a Laser Hair Treatment?
For effective laser hair removal, understanding the natural hair growth cycle is essential. Hair grows in three main phases, and laser hair removal works best when targeting hair in the anagen (growth) phase. Here’s a look at each stage of the cycle and how it affects laser hair removal timing.
The Hair Growth Cycle
- Anagen (Growth Phase):
During the anagen phase, hair actively grows from the follicle, and it is rich in melanin (pigment). Since lasers target melanin, this phase is ideal for treatment. Depending on the area of the body, the anagen phase can last between 2 to 6 years, with about 85% of our body hair in this phase at any time. - Catagen (Transition Phase):
In the catagen phase, hair growth slows, and the hair follicle begins to shrink. This phase lasts around 1-2 weeks and marks the end of active growth. Laser treatment is less effective in this phase since there is less melanin in the follicle. - Telogen (Resting Phase):
The telogen phase is a resting period for the hair follicle that lasts about 2-4 months. During this phase, old hair falls out, and a new hair begins to form in the follicle. Since the hair is not actively growing, laser hair removal is generally ineffective during this time.
Laser Hair Removal Timing
Laser hair removal is most effective on hair in the anagen phase. However, because hair follicles in each area of the body cycle through these phases at different rates, treatments must be spaced out to target hairs that are actively growing.
Recommended Frequency of Laser Hair Removal Sessions:
- Face: Every 4-6 weeks
- Body areas (legs, arms, back, chest): Every 6-8 weeks
- Hormone-sensitive areas (bikini line, underarms): Every 6-8 weeks
Why Timing Matters
Spacing treatments based on the hair growth cycle allows the laser to catch hair in the anagen phase more effectively over multiple sessions. Typically, 6-8 sessions are needed to achieve optimal hair reduction, with longer intervals for hormone-sensitive areas to account for their unique hair cycles.
By following the recommended treatment intervals, clients can maximize the results of laser hair removal, ultimately achieving longer-lasting smoothness.
